Jacob Hartman

Jacob Hartman has been a mechanic at Schultz Lawnscapes’ Waverly shop for over a year.  His mission every day is to maintain, diagnose, and repair the company’s trucks and vehicles so that Schultz crews can stay on the road servicing customers.

Jacob explains, “It’s not always so easy to diagnose a problem.  On the most challenging problems, I have to go through a process of elimination and many tests to pinpoint the issue that needs to be fixed.  This is my favorite part of the job!”

Before coming to work at Schultz, Jacob was a mechanic at a Ford dealership.  And before that, he served in the United States Army where he spent five years in Hawaii and was responsible for manning big cannons.

Originally from Illinois, Jacob now lives in Ivor, Virginia and loves the area.  During his free time, Jacob enjoys hunting, fishing, and cooking barbeque on his smoker.

rhonda rook

As the Operations & Financial Analyst at Schultz Lawnscapes, Rhonda Rook’s mission is to collect data on the company’s business operations and finances, identify important trends, and provide reports and recommendations to management.  Rhonda brings to Schultz Lawnscapes twenty-five years of experience as a business and project manager at Davis Travel Centers.

Her first and favorite project since starting at Schultz last November has been the implementation of a new software program that monitors equipment repairs/maintenance costs, the flow of work orders, and the creation of preventative maintenance schedules.  Rhonda works with Schultz’ mechanics at each of the three business locations (Waverly, Richmond, & Hampton) and outside vendors in her efforts to set up the program and put it into daily use.  This program will ultimately provide useful data that will serve to streamline decision-making and reduce equipment costs.

Moving to a new industry after twenty-five years is exciting, but also challenging.  Rhonda explains, “There has been a lot for me to learn about the landscaping business, but it’s been fun.  There are a lot of calculations and estimations that need to be completed for every project.  A lot of work goes into the planning process to produce a successful project for the company and its customers.”

In her spare time, Rhonda enjoys camping, boating, and just sitting on the beach and chilling at Lake Gaston.  It’s her happy place and just ten minutes from her home near Emporia.  We are very excited to welcome Rhonda to the Schultz Lawnscapes team!

carlton drew

As a Power Washer at Schultz Lawnscapes, Carlton is not your average power washer and the equipment he uses are not your average power washers either.  Every single day he travels to Smithfield’s hog farms to spend 8+ hours washing out hog barns.  This cleansing process takes place after a group of hogs have moved out and before a new group moves in. The heavy commercial power washers Carlton operates take raw strength, endurance, and perseverance to operate for hours and hours each day.  It’s tough, arduous work and only the strong survive. Carlton is one of the strong ones.  This year he celebrates two years of working at Schultz.

Recently facing the loss of his close friend and co-worker Jerman Warren, Carlton’s inner strength has enabled him to move forward and honor his friend.  Prior to Jerman’s death in a tragic fishing accident, Carlton and Jerman came to work together each day, always rode in the truck together to the hog farm, and spent all day together washing out the barns.  They were a team.  The loss of a friend, co-worker, and valued employee has been traumatic for both Carlton and Schultz Lawnscapes, but Carlton has found a way to honor the memory of his friend Jerman by being a leader and a positive role model at work.  Carlton has stepped up to the plate providing training and guidance to the power washing crew, and he’s welcomed a new partner for the morning truck ride to the farm.  Carlton has successfully harnessed his strength, inside and out, to make a positive impact at Schultz Lawnscapes.

What does Carlton like to do when he isn’t working?  He says quietly, “I love to play cornhole with the guys and go fishing for bass.”  He says he gets lucky every now and then and hooks a 7 pounder.

Ric Ericksonwideshot.jpg

ric erickson

When he isn’t doing flips on his wake board in the James River or wakeboarding in alligator-filled lakes in Florida, Ric Erickson is creating landscape designs, producing estimates, and working with customers at Schultz Lawnscapes.  You can bet his spirit of adventure on the wakeboard filters over to his projects and his customer service too.  Ric reveals, “We generally don’t say no to our customers.  We’re excited about doing what our customers want!  We’ll do “flips” for our customers to ensure they’re happy.”

Ric Erickson came to Schultz Lawnscapes three years ago.  He had worked with the company’s former Business Development Manager years earlier at Dominion Pavers in the Richmond area, and one day he called Ric looking for a designer for Schultz Lawnscapes.  Ric jumped on the opportunity, bringing with him over 25 years of experience in landscape design, as well as hardscape and plant installation. Ric is a member of the Virginia Society of Landscape Designers, and he is passionate about helping his customers achieve their dreams of a well-designed outdoor space.

What have been Ric’s favorite projects at Schultz?  “I enjoyed working at the Windsor Castle home at Windsor Castle Park in Smithfield.  It’s a 200-year-old home and we had to be very exact in our landscaping,” Ric explains.  Currently he is enjoying working with the City of Petersburg to turn a former parking lot across from St. Joseph’s School into a beautiful garden with native trees.

It’s no surprise that what Ric likes most about working at Schultz Lawnscapes is that every day is a new adventure.  Every day is an opportunity to create another happy customer!  If you have property that needs a landscape design and installation, you can depend on Ric.  And if wakeboarding in an alligator-filled lake is on your bucket list, you can call Ric for that too.  FYI, plan your outing when the water is chilly and the gators are sleeping.

Daniel Photo.jpg

daniel mckenney

What began as a summer job back in 2013 has blossomed into a rewarding career for Daniel McKenney.  Daniel thoughtfully reveals, “I am really thankful for my career at Schultz Lawnscapes.  I started one summer during high school and continued to work at Schultz during my college years.  I’ve worked my way up in the business and today I have a great job as Manager-Safety Director.  I have been able to establish myself in my career, buy a house, start a family with my wife Kristen, and continue to live in Sussex the county where I was raised.”

Daniel has worked his way up at Schultz the old-fashioned way, through hard work, perseverance, and an eagerness to take on more responsibilities.  During summer and spring breaks in high school, he worked as a landscape crew member and crew leader.  When Daniel was in college, he transitioned from landscape maintenance to in-stall projects.  After receiving his college degree, Daniel moved up to the manager position he has today.

As Safety Director, Daniel makes sure that all the landscape crews have the tools, equipment, and safety gear they need before heading out to Schultz projects each day.  He also oversees the company’s safety program.  Schultz has taken on more construction projects in the last few years, and Daniel focuses a lot of attention to maintaining excellence in Schultz’ safety program.  Most recently, he served a pivotal leadership role in opening the company’s new Hampton Branch.

What does Daniel like best about his career at Schultz Lawnscapes?  He says, “I like the work environment at Schultz.  The company treats its employees really well.  As an employee, when you accomplish good things, you’re rewarded.  Nothing goes unnoticed.  Plus, I like working outside.  It’s a very fast paced environment and keeping the pace can be challenging sometimes, but we always persevere and get things done.”

It’s a great benefit to Sussex County when the young people it educates decide to stay and devote their talents and skills to growing their careers in Sussex.  Schultz is thankful to have Daniel on the Schultz team!

raymond clark

Who travels to a casino, a 4,000-acre Charlottesville estate, and the beach all in the same day?  Well, that would be Raymond Clark.  It’s only been two months since Raymond started working at Schultz, but he’s quickly learned how exciting each day can be!  It’s exactly what Raymond was looking for.

Raymond had spent 32 years driving a regular route for Spencer.  He loved his job at Spencer, delivering oil to customers in Sussex and surrounding counties.  When Raymond joined Schultz Lawnscapes, his travels would lead him down new roads…new roads and new adventures.  And when one sits down and talks to Raymond, it’s easy to see that he is in his happy place.  He says, “Every day is so different.  I might be hauling materials to a job in Richmond one day and then Virginia Beach the next day, and then some days I might travel to several jobs in totally different areas of the state all in the same day.  I love not having a routine day.  And I enjoy meeting so many different people in my travels.”

Raymond was born and raised in Waverly.  He’s pretty much always lived about 5 minutes from his workplace, had a great career at Spencer, and is continuing that career at Schultz.  Raymond has known  Corey and Wilson Schultz their entire lives.  He smiles and says, “They are good people to work for!”

After hauling landscaping materials all week, one might be surprised at what Raymond likes to do on his days off….he likes to work in his yard.

karen howerton

Sometimes a door of opportunity opens and you just know it must have opened for you.  That’s the way Karen Howerton feels about her new job at Schultz Lawnscapes.  After working in the accounting department at Meadowbrook County Club for many years, she was in the mood for a change but hadn’t yet begun an active search.

Then one day in late 2020, Karen just happened to see a job announcement for an accounting associate at Schultz Lawnscapes in Waverly.  It caught her eye, not only because it was an opportunity within her field, but also because her husband had fished with Corey and knew a little bit about the company.  Plus, she knew the Waverly area pretty well!  Karen had been living in McKenney, VA in Dinwiddie County since 1987, but had spent all of her school years at Tidewater Academy and had grown up in Stony Creek.

Karen couldn’t help but be intrigued by this potential opportunity, so she quickly assembled a resume and hit it the “send” button.  Yes, she was intrigued, but she never thought she’d actually get a call to come for an interview.  But she did.  And the rest is history. Karen’s first day at Schultz was January 4, 2021.  She spends her days working on accounts receivables and payables, banking, and some general ledger functions for the company.  And she loves it!  Karen looks forward to continuing to grow in her position and take on additional duties in the future.

What’s the best thing about working at Schultz Lawnscapes?  Karen enthusiastically says, “I absolutely love how supportive and appreciative Corey, Wilson, and Sherri are.  Every single day, without fail, they tell me how much they appreciate what I do.  It’s a wonderful place to work!”

Corey & Wilson Schultz - President & Vice President of Schultz Lawnscapes

It all began with a 12 year-old boy who had an entrepreneurial spirit, a lawnmower, and a few customers who were eager for his help and eager to support his endeavor.  That young boy with a dream was Corey Schultz.  He began his summer lawncare business, Schultz Lawnscapes, back in 1993 in his hometown of Waverly, VA.  It wasn’t long before Corey’s brother Wilson joined him in the new business venture.   In those early days before they were able to drive, the brothers didn’t let the challenge of crossing a four lane highway like Rt 460 deter them from reaching their customers. Where there was a will, there was a way, and the brothers fondly recall that Corey would ride across the highway on the lawnmower while Wilson followed on his bicycle.

A strong work ethic, a love for beautiful lawns, and happy customers enabled them to continue to grow their lawncare business during their high school years at Sussex Central High School.  During their college years at Randolph Macon in Ashland, VA, both Corey and Wilson kept the business going.  Corey recalls many occasions when he headed back to Waverly after a morning of college classes to spend the afternoon sharpening lawn mower blades and visiting customers to ensure they were happy.  Both brothers graduated from Randolph Macon College with Business Administration degrees… Corey in 2003 and Wilson in 2006.

By 2006, Corey and Wilson knew it was time to dedicate 100% of their efforts to Schultz Lawnscapes and continue to diversify their lawncare and landscaping services.  As President, Corey focused mainly on business development efforts and as Vice President, Wilson focused on production and maintenance. They operated the business from a small shop on the outskirts of Waverly and conducted team meetings around the kitchen table.

By 2016, Schultz Lawnscapes had moved from the shop to its current prominent location on Rt 460.  By 2018, Corey and Wilson opened a second shop in Sandston in Henrico County.  And in 2021, the brothers plan to open a third location in Hampton, VA.  Today Schultz Lawnscapes has over 80 employees who service residential and commercial customers from RVA to OBX!  Over the years the company has experienced tremendous growth, but one thing that has always remained the same is Schultz Lawnscapes’ focus on customer satisfaction

It all began with a 12 year old boy who had an idea.  Twenty-eight years later, brothers Corey and Wilson have grown a thriving Virginia landscaping business.  With perseverance, a strong work ethic, and a dedication to customer service, the brothers turned their dream into a reality.   Give them the opportunity to turn your dream into your reality!
